Postherpetic Neuralgia

PHN is a condition characterized by a persistent nerve pain that occurs after a shingles outbreak. Shingles is also known as herpes zoster , is caused by the varicella -zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus remain dormant in the body and reactive later in life , leading to shingles. PHN typically develops in the area where the shingles rash occurred and is characterized by, sharp , burning, or even shooting pain. It can be a long lasting condition that persists for months or even years after the shingles rash has healed. The pain associated with PHN can be debilitating and have a significant impact on  a persons quality of life. Treatment for postherpetic neuralgia aims to manage the pain and may include medications. There are other pain management techniques like physical therapy , electrical nerve stimulation.
